Mylan Pharmaceutical
Mylan Pharmaceutical
Mylan
Laboratories Inc. is one of the world's leading manufacturers of prescription
medicines specializing in developing, manufacturing and marketing generic
pharmaceuticals. Mylan manufactures and markets 160 generic products in nearly
400 product strengths, covering 46 therapeutic categories. During the most
recent fiscal year, Mylan shipped more than 12.6 billion dosages, and more than
230 million prescriptions were dispensed in the United States with Mylan
products.
Mylan manufactures products for conditions ranging from
angina to arthritis, depression to diabetes, pain to Parkinson's disease, and
schizophrenia to sleep disorders, to name just a few. Mylan has a
well-established reputation for quality, and is a leader in the development and
production of sophisticated dosage forms such transdermal patches, as well as
extended-release tablets and capsules.
Mylan is proud to have been a
driving force in the formation and phenomenal growth of the generic
pharmaceutical industry. Since 1984, generic utilization has increased from
approximately 19% of prescriptions dispensed to over 50% of prescriptions
dispensed in the United States today. Generics have become an absolutely
critical component of the health care system as they save consumers, insurers
and other prescription drug buyers billions of dollars every year. These
savings have made maintaining programs such as Medicaid and private drug
benefit plans possible.
Mylan is headquartered just outside of
Pittsburgh. The company operates through its three subsidiaries: Mylan
Pharmaceuticals (Morgantown, W.Va.) is primarily focused on solid oral dose
generic pharmaceutical products. Mylan Technologies (St. Albans, Vt.) is the
market leader in generic transdermal drug delivery technology and is the
largest producer of generic transdermal patches for the U.S. market. UDL
Laboratories (Rockford, Ill.) is the number one supplier of unit dose
pharmaceuticals to hospitals and other institutions across the United
States.
Significant opportunities lie ahead for Mylan. There is expected
to be a significant number of branded products coming off patent industry-wide
over the next several years, with more than $75 billion of branded
pharmaceuticals potentially losing exclusivity between 2005 and 2008. Mylan has
made significant investments in R&D over the past several years and now has
the deepest product pipeline in the history of the company, including generic
drug submissions pending before the FDA that represent more than $35 billion of
2004 branded pharmaceutical sales. Mylan anticipates obtaining approval of over
100 new products over the next five years.
