use the most advanced tools available, including bioinformatics, combinatorial
chemistry, genomics, high-throughput screening, pharmacogenomics, recombinant
DNA techniques, and computerized molecular modeling. These resources allow
Merck to stay at the forefront of discovery.
Pharmaceutical
Sciences
The Pharmaceutical Sciences, a scientific discipline
custom-tailored to drug development, is represented at MRL in the
Pharmaceutical Research and Development (PR&D) and Drug Metabolism
Departments. To support appropriate delivery of Merck's new medicines and
vaccines, expertise in pharmaceutics and pharmacokinetics is used in PR&D
to guide the development of drug formulations, packaging and devices. These
same techniques are used in Drug Metabolism to study the absorption,
distribution, metabolism and elimination of drug candidates in biological
systems.
MSD in the UK
Merck Sharp & Dohme Ltd is the UK
subsidiary of the global, research-driven pharmaceutical company Merck &
Co., Inc. Merck & Co. Inc discovers, develops, manufactures and markets a
range of products to improve human health.
MSD has committed substantial
long-term investment to research and manufacturing in the UK because of the
unrivalled scientific excellence and skills base available here. It has four
sites in the UK :- headquarters at Hoddesdon, Hertfordshire, research at
Terlings Park in Essex, and manufacturing at Cramlington in Northumberland and
Ponders End in Enfield.
Merck Sharp and Dohme Limited is the UK
subsidiary of Merck & Co., Inc., a global pharmaceutical company. Merck
& Co., Inc. merged with UK partnership Sharp & Dohme in 1953 to create
MSD. MSD has discovered eight products in the UK, which are among Merck’s
most popular medicines. MSD is headquartered in Hoddesdon, Hertfordshire and
employs approximately 2000 people in the UK. It has three other sites in the UK
– Terlings Park in Essex, Cramlington in Northumberland and Ponders End in
Enfield. Around 18 medicines are manufactured in the UK by MSD. UK sales
amounted to £451 million in 2004. MSD has invested £290 million in
the UK between 2002 and 2005. Over £300 million per year is spent on
research by MSD.
