Janssen-Cilag is a world leading
research-based pharmaceutical company and has over 6,000 employees throughout
Europe, involved with the marketing and development of medicines and with a
focus on such therapeutic areas as pain, psychiatry, neurology,
gastrointestinal and fungal diseases
Cilag was founded in Switzerland in
1936, with Janssen Pharmaceutica being established in 1953 by Dr Paul Janssen,
who has been described as "arguably the most successful drug discoverer of all
time", being responsible for several breakthrough drugs in areas such as
anaesthesia, pain management, psychiatry, gastroenterology, mycology and
numerous other therapeutic areas.
In 1959, Cilag joined the Johnson
& Johnson family of companies, followed by anssen Pharmaceutica in 1961.
This initiated an international expansion that has resulted in the
establishment of Janssen Pharmaceutica companies in virtually all countries of
the world.
In 1994, Janssen Pharmaceutica integrated its sales and
marketing organisations worldwide with that of Cilag and became Janssen-Cilag.
Later the two research organisations merged into Johnson & Johnson
Pharmaceutical Research & Development (J&JPRD) and Tibotec was created
in 1994 by a group of scientists wanting to discover and develop innovative
HIV/AIDS drugs and superior anti-infectives.
