Bayer Pharmaceutical
Bayer Pharmaceutical
The Bayer UK/Ireland Region is
part of the global concern Bayer AG, based in Leverkusen, Germany, with 122,600
employees worldwide and a yearly turnover of 30 billion Euro's across its three
main business areas - HealthCare, MaterialScience and CropScience.
In
Europe, where 40% of the company's turnover resides, the UK/Ireland region is
placed fourth, with almost £1billion in sales, 2,500 employees, 10% of
Bayer's shareholders and 16 operating companies, whose activities mirror
Bayer's operations globally.
Bayer has been trading in the UK/Ireland
region since Friedrich Bayer first sold his dyestuffs here in 1871. Early
business was handled through the offices of engineering company JM Steel, then
through Bayer's own operations, based in Manchester, then Surrey and, latterly,
in Newbury, Berkshire. In the 30 or so years since Bayer UK was formed, sales
have multiplied 20-fold, with a four-fold increase in employees.
Bayer
focuses strongly on the key goals of improving profit performance and cost
efficiency, leading to top line growth and, ultimately, added value for all its
stakeholders - customers, suppliers, shareholders, employees and its local
communities. The company has significant diagnostics equipment manufacturing
units in the UK/Ireland, making it a major exporter, as well as importers,
distributors and sales and marketing specialists.
As a world player,
sourcing products internationally as well as exporting to international
companies here and abroad, its systems are compliant with many currencies and
it already operates as a "Euro company", invoicing nearly half its turnover in
Euros.
Bayer has over 10,000 products, found in virtually every area of
human activity. One thing they all have in common is that they are derived
from, or related to chemistry. Another characteristic is that many of them are
unrecognisable to the man in the street, as they are often raw materials that
go to make a consumer product. There are well known exceptions, such as Alka
Seltzer, Baby Bio and Levitra, which enjoy a high profile. Equally, Bayer has
its own industrial brands, like the polycarbonate (a third of the world's CDs
are made from it) and a cold-steriliser for the soft drinks industry. The
company is equally proud to be associated with some of the region's - indeed
the world's - biggest brands, which use Bayer's materials in the manufacture of
their own world-beating products.
Bayer Pharmaceuticals
Effective prescription medicines have made Bayer famous throughout the
world. Our pharmaceutical research has indeed made medical history with Bayer
Aspirin, and sulphonamides (the first effective anti-infectives).
A few
prominent examples of the wide range of Bayer pharmaceuticals include products
in the areas of Cardiovascular, Central Nervous System (CNS), anti-infectives,
anti-diabetic agents and genetically engineered blood coagulation
factors.
Anti-Infectives - In the UK and the Republic of Ireland,
Bayer is a major force in the antibiotic market and has a long-standing
commitment to continuing research and development of existing and future
products.
Biological Products - In the innovative area of
biological products, Bayer is a world leader with our recombinant factor VIII,
for patients with haemophilia, products for blood conservation during surgery,
and products in the treatment of immuno-deficiency syndromes.
Cardiovascular Disease - Bayer has a strong heritage in the
field of cardiovascular medicine with world brand leaders in hypertension and
angina.
Central Nervous System (CNS) - Bayer has the only
licensed product available for the treatment of subarrachnoid haemorrhage, and
continuing research means that further products are expected in the CNS
arena.
Ongoing Bayer Research - Bayer invests in pharmaceutical
research in both existing medicines, and in the discovery and development of
new innovative compounds for a variety of diseases. Major research areas
include cardiovascular disease, metabolic disorders, diseases of the central
nervous system, respiratory disease, cancer, biological and biotechnologically
engineered products.
Current Bayer Major Brands (UK) - Adalat LA,
Ciproxin, Glucobay, Kogenate, Nimotop & Levitra.
