Abbott History

Founded in 1888 by Dr. Wallace Abbott, Abbott Laboratories has contributed a host of major medical breakthroughs across the health care spectrum. These achievements are the direct result of a commitment to the innovative thinking and measurable results that are our hallmark.

More than a century ago, 30-year-old Wallace C. Abbott, M.D., began making a new form of medicine. Using the active - or alkaloid - part of a medicinal plant, he formed tiny pills, called “dosimetric granules,” which provided a measured amount of the drug. The demand for these accurate granules soon far exceeded the needs of his own practice. From a small operation based above Dr. Abbott’s pharmacy, Abbott Laboratories has evolved into one of the world’s leading health care companies.

Abbott has facilities in more than 40 countries and markets its products in more than 130 countries. More than 60,000 Abbott employees around the world have devoted their careers to advancing the practice of health care.

The largest concentration of Abbott employees is in Lake County, Ill., home to both corporate headquarters at Abbott Park and the company's principal manufacturing location at North Chicago. Still, less than one-third of all Abbott employees are located in Illinois. The majority of our employees are spread across the United States and around the world.
