3M History
3M was founded in 1902 in
the Lake Superior town of Two Harbors, Minnesota, when five businessmen agreed
to mine a mineral deposit for grinding-wheel abrasives. But the deposits proved
to be of little value, and the new Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing Company
moved to nearby Duluth in 1905 to focus on sandpaper products.
Years of
struggle ensued until the company could master quality production. New
investors were attracted to 3M and the company moved to St. Paul in 1910. Early
technical and marketing innovations began to produce successes and, in 1916,
the company paid its first dividend of 6 cents a share.

Respiratory
3M has been at the forefront of inhaler technology for
more than 40 years and is renowned for its technological expertise in the field
of respiratory medicine. 3M developed the first portable MDI (metered dose
inhaler) in 1956, the first breath actuated inhaler in the 1970's and the first
CFC free inhaler in the 1990's. Currently more than half of all inhalers
produced globally use 3M technology.

Health Care has discovered a number of novel molecules aimed at modifying the
individual patient's own immune system and thereby enabling an improved immune
response in certain clinical conditions. This has already lead to the
development and release of a treatment for External Genital Warts, a condition
caused by human papilloma virus.
